White Peacock Coat

The one of a kind “White Peacock Coat”, MaryGwyneth’s foundation piece in this collection, was chosen as a 2010 NICHE Award Finalist by NICHE Magazine – the exclusive trade publication for independent retailers of American and Canadian fine craft.
The beaded two-piece coat or bolero jacket is constructed of white silk charmeuse. The silk fabric is surface textured in a peacock feather pattern, by couching a champagne-colored, silk-rayon blend chenille yarn with metallic silver thread.
The original, dramatic and elegant cut drapes gracefully on the female figure. The sleeve’s shaped design alludes to bird’s wings, while the shoulder-to-elbow, freshwater pearl-studded openwork whispers the high Renaissance.
Silk charmeuse cord defines the feather quills. Silk-rayon chenille yarn is then zig-zag couched to silk charmeuse, quilting it at the same time to a flannel cotton and silk organza interlining, in a peacock feather pattern. Shimmering metallic silver thread adds radiance, without overwhelming the lovely natural creamy tones and sheen of the chenille. The coat’s charmeuse lining is hand-quilted to the shell using vintage silk pearl thread in a feather-like catch stitch.
Textured freshwater pearls and silver lined beads render the peacock feather eyes. Along the coat and sleeve edges, a sparkling fringe of long, silver- lined, twisted beads suggests the motion of feathers in the breeze. A vintage peacock feather-shaped rhinestone clasp closes the coat at the front center.
The inside is as pretty as the outside, with lace, appliqué, and hand embroidery throughout. Silk-covered snaps attach the skirt of the two piece White Peacock Coat to the bolero-style jacket, which can be worn separately over the White Peacock Gown.
